90% Of Golf Is Played In Your Mind

Last week film star, Bill Murray and I played golf together. At least that’s how it felt. Remember Caddyshack? Bill played the part of an assistant grounds keeper who plays fantasy golf with golf balls bouncing off trees, gophers, and sprinkler systems. Well that was me last week.

No matter how I set up, aimed and swung, my head was playing fantasy golf. If the thought came to me to avoid the trees, the ball went right into the trees. Avoid the sand bunker? My third shot plugged right into the deep sand. As I walked onto the ninth tee box I realized I had not yet lost a ball during the round. (A common occurrence in my game.) I tried to shake the thought, but as I placed my ball on the tee and turned the marks so they pointed to the fairway, I heard a little voice say, “This is the last you’ll see of this little ball.” And of course the voice was right. I hit the ball deep into the woods. And that was that. Lost ball—again!

Do you ever find yourself losing focus, or having negative thoughts during a round of golf? This video I found by LPGA Pro Randy Friedman has some good advice on the mental game of golf we can all use. Randy has also written a book which is now available in both hardcover and kindle editions at amazon.com:  Your Inner Swing – 7 Lessons in Golf… and Life!
