Buying A Golf Jacket: You’d Think This Would Be Easy!

I have wasted hours of my time traipsing around town from one golf store to the next trying to find the “perfect” golf jacket for the coming season. You’d think women didn’t play the sport at all based on the inventory I saw. No choice in colors or sizes, just a few scruffy samples left over from last year. I know it’s still early but you would think some new spring looks would be on the racks by now.

Of course the same shops are jammed with all kinds of jackets and stuff for the guys who play golf—and they have them in every conceivable size. The colors are limited, I must admit – mostly blacks, blues, tans, one or two reds and maybe a green (dark, of course—no lime greens among the men’s apparel.)

One store owner tried to explain his lack of inventory. “It’s like this, the ladies never liked what I had. It was always the wrong color, or the wrong size. It’s just not worth it to keep the stuff in stock. I gave up carrying ladies golfwear a couple of years ago.” He recommended I try one of the big stores at the local mall or try online. I hit the mall on my way home without any success.

What am I looking for? What is the perfect jacket for the coming golf season? Here’s a list:

  • It has to be warm, not heavy, but a good early season jacket to ward off those cool spring morning temps.
  • It has to be waterproof. I don’t want to come in soaking wet if the heavens open up.
  • It has to be able to breathe. If I layer a shirt and turtle neck underneath the jacket I don’t want to “cook” as the day’s temps begin to rise.
  • And it has to fit right, look good and have some style.

Is this too much to ask? By the way, I did check my local golf club for what they had in stock. And they, like the stores, have a small selection that just didn’t fit my needs. So I’m searching.

Here are some of the online retailers I’ve been checking out.

I’ve been online since my retail store search of yesterday, and have come across a couple of possibilities. But I’d be interested in what you have to suggest. Have you found the perfect jacket?

Thanks Nadine. Good resource. And it’s true. We women are always looking for a bargain!

A golf rep explained recently that courses do not stock women’s golf wear because women typically do not buy at a Pro Shop. The reason – we are always looking for sales and we’d be willing to take a chance of finding what we are looking for at a discount retailer such as TJMaxx.

On the other hand, and although I haven’t looked for a new golf jacket this year, I can tell you that the Pro Shop at Rockland Golf Course in Rockland, MA generally has in stock the best selection of women’s clothing and shoes.
