Confession #3: I Played Macho Golf & I Melted

If you like to walk the golf course rather than ride in one of those fancy little golf carts, you will understand my frustration.

I’m overweight! but Isn’t everyone? And when I get a chance to walk or ride during a round of golf, I will usually walk the golf course, hoping to loose a few bits of my middle. But — and let this be a warning to all you macho women golfers who walk no matter the weather, no matter how high the humidity or the temp— there is a price to be paid for being stubborn and playing macho golf.

The truth of it: Sometimes taking a cart will save your score.

Today for example: It was a cool 63 degrees when we started our round at 7:03 am, but by the time I was walking down the long 18th fairway, the sun was high in the sky, the humidity heavy and my energy was melting away. I had walked the front nine without a problem and thought I could walk the back. “Why not?” I asked myself. “My golf is going well, and I’m feeling good about my game. So when Dick, the starter who met us at the turn, asked if I wanted a cart, I shook my head “no” and confidently walked down the path to the 10th tee, ignoring my body’s “gut sense” telling me to get a cart and enjoy the ride.

Not every hole on the back nine was a disaster, but the 18th, already one of the toughest on the course, ate me up and spit me out! My drive went deep into the left rough, followed by three!! count ’em three!! whiffs in the air. By the time I reached the green, I was already at my max and the ball was in my pocket. All because I was just too stubborn to admit I needed a ride. (Please note: my golf partners must have asked half a dozen times if I wanted to hop onto one of their golf carts, but I was too macho to give in. Stupido!!! and frustrating.)

I’ve learned my lesson. Walk when you can, ride when you should. Amen!

Do you walk or ride? If it’s hitting 90 in the shade are you still determined to walk?

Doesn’t get too humid in CA so we tend to walk, I play better & faster when walking. This does depend on if you have an easy walking course too, & always better if you have a caddie to carry.

We have a lot of hills on our courses here on Cape Cod… but at this point, with a blizzard on the way, I would happily walk just to get out there!

I’ve finally learned. I start out walking and find I’m more apt to take a cart on the back side. Even if my older foursome continue to walk.
I overheat quicker than many of the other ladies.
    Comfort over stoic ⛳️
