Atlantic Country Club: “the most under-appreciated golf course in Massachusetts.”
Just finished playing 18 holes at the Atlantic – The New England Journal of Golf‘calls it one of the most under-appreciated golf courses, and their take on this gem of a golf course is right on. Tucked into a secluded section of South Plymouth, Atlantic Country Club is not easy to find unless you have a GPS. But it should be on every golfer’s “to play” list.
With over 178 acres of gently rolling topography, the course features meticulously kept bent grass fairways and greens and includes four sets of tees. My friends and I decided to test our skill on an overcast day this summer. The high humidity and the cloudy sky kept a lot of golfers off the course, which was fine for us. Without the press of golfers coming up behind us, we took our time to really appreciate the course. At first look, the course did not look that difficult. But with elevated greens, many with false fronts, sinking putts took a lot of skill and determination and it didn’t help that heavy rains over the past few days had soaked both greens and fairways testing putting skills to the max.
I played well enough but now that I am a more familiar with the course I would like to play it again. There was one hole, the 15th — that featured a very large pond. I aimed for the fairway running down the right side and made it to the bottom of “the bowl.” From there it was about 110 yards up to an elevated green. BUT ambition overtook wisdom and I tried to cut the corner. My ball did a flying dive into the pond. Lucky I had many more balls in my bag. Next time I won’t let my ambition get the better of my game.
We ended the round at the Clubhouse Grill for burgers and beer. Simple and delicious.
If you are looking for a challenging course, reasonably priced, discover the Atlantic Country Club. You will not be disappointed. But I would play it soon. Good news travels fast, and the Atlantic won’t stay undiscovered for too long.
