Fairway Confession #2 – Pushing Putts

Personal rants and reflections on the game you can never win!!!

I almost made two birdies today. Playing my home course and hitting my drives pretty well. Landed only a few feet from the pin on at least two par 3s. The distance was so short, I was convinced the ball would drop and I’d be looking at a birdie.

But it didn’t happen. I set my ball up on the right line, but went just off it and passed the hole, stopping a foot or so away. Second putt should be easy peasy.

But it didn’t happen. I was so sure it would go in, I rushed and hit the ball back, it ran the rim of the cup and I ended up with a couple of 3 putts.

Why did I rush? Why did I take the putt for granted. These are the putts that often make all the difference between a great score and an ok score.

Yes, I sunk a 60 foot putt on the par 4… but that was just dumb luck.

So do you ever rush your putts? If you don’t what’s your secret to slowing down???

Unless it’s a gimme, I mark, clean, line it up and putt like my life depends on it, oh and I don’t move my head till I hear it drop. My morning crew plays a buck a hole, which helps keep the focus going.

Every step a good idea. Unless the ball is almost in the hole, I prefer to putt rather than take a gimme. Been with too many people who take too many gimmes and when it really counts they can’t make short putts!
