I’ve Finally Found My Golf Ball! Nix To Titleist – Yes To The Nike CRUSH: A Review

I’ve been playing golf for a number of years with mixed results… which means, some days I play well, some days I play really badly. My golf instructor tells me the number one thing her students ask for above all else is how to be consistent! And I have to agree. Consistency is the goal of every golfer — and the one thing that eludes most of us. Even the pros seek consistency. Just look at some of the best players in the last year. One day they can do no wrong and the next they can’t seem to get out of their own way. That’s been my tune these last months.

For Christmas last year I was given a gift – a large box of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. I know how good they are supposed to be and I know how expensive they are. At $49 a box of 12 balls, that’s a little over $4.00 a ball. I was eager to try them out and when the season began a few months later, I determined to use them in my first round.

It didn’t take long for me to realize these balls were not made for my game. No matter how carefully I set up, tried to align my club and the target and how consciously I swung I could not hit a Titlelist ProV1 ball anywhere near the center of the fairway. Hook, slice — the ball went every which way but straight.  And it wasn’t the balls fault! The ProV1 is a great golf ball for someone with the right swing speed and strength. They are designed for very good golfers. With a three-piece multi-layered construction, this ball is meant for low handicappers who have a swing speed above 100 mph. That isn’t me. I wrote about the importance of choosing the right ball for your golf game in an earlier post. Click here to read it. Also read the guest post from Jack Moorehouse that covers some of the same information.

Nike Crush Golf BallIt took me most of the season, testing a variety of golf balls to finally find one that works for me: The Nike CRUSH. No one recommended the ball to me, but when I went in search of a new supply at my local golf retailer, I chose this one for the simplest of reasons: I liked the color of the box: a bright, navy blue, and the name “CRUSH” wasn’t bad either. Ok, I know my reason for choosing the ball is lame, but I have to tell you – this golf ball works for me. It really does. I’ve played six rounds using it and without question my game has improved. My drives are straighter and longer than they ever have been. I haven’t changed anything in my set up and if anything, my swing is a little slower. You’d think that would give me less distance. Not true.

Here’s what the blurb on the packaging reads:

Softer core and optimized cover combine for straighter distance. CRUSH works with your swing to go deeper off the tee, find more fairways and add feel around the greens. This two-piece golf ball combines a softer compression core, an optimized lonomer cover design and a new micro-composite coating to create a ball made for long distances.

Why does this ball work for me when others don’t? I don’t know. Maybe it’s a psychological thing. I hit one good ball and now I have it in my head that this is the ball for me. Might be true. Golf is a funny game and so many things can affect the way you play. But for right now, whether it’s in my head or my hands, I am having good success with the Nike CRUSH.

This is a great golf ball that I strongly recommend you test out. And at $25 for a box of 12 balls… it’s a good price too.

Which is your favorite golf ball? And why do you like it so much?

Choosing something because you liked the box really takes the complexity out of buying things. I too must admit that I buy things strictly based on advertising and packaging at times.
