What Do Golf and Business Leadership Have In Common?

What if you could spend a day on a golf course and walk away with a better understanding of three personal keys to the way you lead people?

This is the key question from the marketing materials of a business program I recently discovered via the LinkedIn Network. Using the game of golf as a discovery tool the team at FORE! Leadership works to help business people uncover the truth about their leadership skills. It’s a rather unique approach.

As a business person I have sat through many day-long workshops that promised to develop all my hidden talents and help me succeed and excel in my chosen profession. More often than not they were head trips. I took notes, I listened to lectures, followed along with the slide presentations and tried to take it all in. Often, the process was overwhelming and there was too much information to integrate into my life and work.

But FORE! Leaderships approach is totally outside the box. You play a round of golf with your buddies and learn from the process. Sounds simple. But it’s not.

Here is what they say about their program: Our objective is to explore and develop your leadership skills in a different environment; so we’ve created a unique workshop based on the royal, ancient and infuriating Game of Golf.

FORE! Leadership

  • Challenges and further develops your ability to effectively communicate leadership
  • Delivers 360 degrees feedback on your personal style
  • Demands you examine your ability to engage a team and how you might add to your leadership masks
  • Keeps you awake, engaged and informed
  • Improves your ability to ‘feel’ your way through, around, over and under future challenges, personal or professional
  • Re-connects you to your subconscious patterns and spring clean them
  • Holds a mirror to you and those around you, in hope that you, and we, can cut the crap and keep it real.
  • Promises not to subject you to lectures, pie charts or death by powerpoint
I particularly like that last point.
If you step back off the tee and take a look at yourself, you’ll realise that golf doesn’t build character…it reveals it.
Fore! uses a unique version of the game as a mirror to reflect, broaden and develop your ability to deliver powerful, motivational leadership every day, simply by being on a ‘course’.

Thanks Steven for your endorsement. Seems that golf is a metaphor for many things: managing your golf buddies on the course and managing them in the office – lots of the same skills come into play.

Great lists and insights! I think you are absolutely right!
