Golf Travel: Amelia Island Plantation – Ocean Links

The Tee Club “Get Away Gurls” Golf Travel Adventure – Day 3

Third day of golf at Amelia Island Golf Plantation – Ocean Links.

This was the least difficult of the three golf courses we played, but by no means a breeze to play. Set along wetlands and with several holes stretched out above the sand dunes at the ocean’s edge, wind played a significant part in our golf game.

We played a best ball scramble format which moved the game along. Everyone contributed, some players with their drives, others with sure sighted putting. On holes 4, 5, 6 along the ocean’s edge, every group stopped to take a quick picture from the elevated tee boxes and enjoy the sun for a moment. Even the course ranger got into the act, holding up to 4 cameras at a time.

Short tight fairways surrounded by sand dunes, brillo rough, and tropical plants—these par 3 holes seemed to eat golf balls. Accuracy was an absolute necessity. Back inland and protected from the high winds, the par 5, hole 7 seemed easy even though water lined both sides of the fairway.

The course wound around to the ocean side one more time. Hole 15 is a short par 3 with a steeply elevated green with its back to the ocean. With the wind blowing straight in our faces and dunes just behind the green it was tricky to get the ball up and on—and have it stay put!

We all had a great time playing this course. In fact, eight of the group decided to play the Ocean Links course one more time. Monday was scheduled to be a packing, shopping, “get to the airport” day, but for those of us addicted to the game, one more chance to play was too much of a temptation and we booked an 8 am start for the next morning. It turned out to be a lucky day – especially for me!

Pat, Love your blog. I have been reading it for over a month. Even gone to the library to get suggested reading-zen golf. Loved hearing about the T-trip, but mostly have been reading the articles and have found some very helpful info. Keep it up. MJ
