Some are blue-blooded conservatives and eyebrows could be raised with a quick flash of a collarless neck, and others wouldn’t mind if you scored a hole-in-one in nothing but your birthday suit. If you’re worried, always dress at the more conservative end of the spectrum and stay away from being scantily clad. We tell you the best way to go about it here.

THE STYLISH COLLARED SHIRT    –    If you wish to look your best on the course then the only way to go is designer. Golf clothes by golfposer.com look good whether you’re swinging for the ball or not at all, and they stock a wide variety of designers from Ralph Lauren to Hugo Boss. Though menswear stockists, a collared golf shirt or polo shirt is always a safe bet for both men and for women, ensuring that you won’t be disturbed by a tut. Available in a wide range of bright trendy colours as well as the more traditional pastels, the great thing about going designer that you know that you’ll look fashionable.  Designers are also catering more to women and creating styles that are more figure-hugging and trendy.

SKIRT, SLACKS OR SHORTS?    –    High class golf clubs probably prefer long trousers or slacks, though skirts are acceptable for women on the course too, as long as it is in keeping with the conservative etiquette. The fit will be important as you don’t want your clothes to be too baggy or too tight as both could interfere with your game. Too much material on a skirt for instance could obstruct your vision, but equally wearing something too tight would restrict movement and hinder your swing.

LENGTH    –    As a woman something that may trouble you is appropriate length. Whether that be of a skirt, shirt or shorts, if you want to play on a certain course you should adhere to the rules of etiquette. Some don’t want to see skin so midriffs in particular should be covered up. Generally, wearing a skirt or shorts more than 5 inches above the knee would be frowned upon.

ACCESSORIES    –    A pair of gloves can add some personality to your outfit and though traditionally white, they are available in coloured leather too. You can also find patterned versions, animal print or polka dot for instance, so you can really make an impression. A hat is always advisable on the course as it can shade your face and focus your vision while you play. A visor or cap must always be worn to the front as it could be seen as inappropriate whilst playing, as well as looking foolish!

THE CLUB    –    The advisable thing to do when going to a new golf course or club would be to ring ahead and ask about the dress code and save yourself any embarrassment or upset!
