How Do You Get Fit For A Golf Ball? I’m Sorry I Missed My Chance.

I needed to stop by my golf club this morning to sign in for next week’s tournament. I noticed a small crowd was gathered down on the practice range, and curious, I asked in the pro shop what was happening. The woman behind the counter said, “It’s a Ball Fitting Event.” I had never heard of such a thing. Golf fitting yes, but not ball fitting. She went on to explain, “There is a professional visiting from Bridgestone. He watches how you swing the club and then recommends the right type of golf ball that matches your swing. He’s giving away free balls too.” Sounded like a great idea, but tempted as I was, I had a client meeting in a half hour and had to take a pass.

But I couldn’t help wondering as I drove to the office, what more could I learn about this ball fitting process. Millions of Americans play golf each year, and many of those buy new balls to do it. There has to be a lot more to this “ball fitting” for a manufacturer like Bridgestone to send out experts to golf courses to help people choose their next sleeve of balls. So I’ve done a little research, and share the results with you here.

They call it The Bridgestone Challenge. The following copy is taken directly from the Bridgestone Challenge site and explains the process of ball fitting far better than I could. If you want to check out their promo video click here.

Take your game to the next level by participating in the Bridgestone Challenge. As with club fitting, ball fitting can guide you to a golf ball that maximizes your performance from tee to green through optimizing your ball speed, launch angle, and spin rates.

Using a sophisticated computer system, the Science Eye, allows us to enhance your performance in a complimentary session. Take the Bridgestone Challenge and find the ball that fits your game!

The Fitting Process:

    • With your driver, you will hit a series of shots with your current golf ball of choice.
    • Based on your ball flight characteristics, the technician will confirm you are playing the right ball or recommend a Bridgestone/Precept ball that better suits your game.
    • After Hitting a series of shots with the recommended ball you will be given a side-by-side comparison of all data allowing you to determine which ball can maximize your performance with your driver.
    • You will hit a series of shots with a mid to short iron with both golf balls.
    • After hitting the shots you will be able to compare launch angle, spin rates and distance to have a better understanding of how the ball performs going into a green.

Sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about my swing and improve my game. I was unable to attend the ball fitting event at my club, but here is a link to the ball fitting schedule that might help you find an event near you.
