The Solheim Cup: The Golf Tournament to Watch

This mid-September teams of professional golfers representing the United States and Europe will compete for the Solheim Cup, one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments. (Equal in stature to the men’s Ryder Cup.) The teams meet at Killeen Castle, County Meath, Ireland, September 23 – 25. The format is match play. (About.com GOLF has a great primer on match play… how to keep score, formats, rules, etc. that is worth reading if you are unfamiliar with this form of competition.)

There are 12 golfers on each team. For the US Team, the first ten slots are filled by the top LPGA tour professionals determined by a point system over a 2-year period, the remaining two slots are captain’s picks. To qualify for the European team, a golfer has to be European and a member of the Ladies European Tour. The team members are determined by a point system: the top 4 on the LET points list, top 4 from the Rolex Rankings and 4 captain’s picks.

The teams:

  • USA: Team Captain: RoJo (Rosie Jones) – Cristie Kerr, Morgan Pressel, Stacy Lewis, Angela Stanford, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome, Brittany Lang, Juli Inkster, Christina Kim. Captain’s picks: Vicky Hurst, Ryann O’Toole
  • Europe: Melissa Reid, Laura Davies, Suzann Pettersen, Christel Boeljon. Additional team players just finalized August 29. Click to read more!

Quite the mix. I’m sure they will all do well. I only wish I could be there to watch. As the teams are finalized and the event gets closer, we will be posting more information.

It’s going to be a great match up. The USA team is looking very strong this time around. They have a lot of players who are having very good a year.

    Cheers
