Where In The World Is The LPGA This Year?

The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) announced its 2012 Tour schedule last week and it is a full schedule! 28 tournaments, including five new events, will be held all over the globe, proving how truly international the LPGA, and golf itself, has become.

The season opens February 9 – 12 at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open in Victoria, Australia. Then it’s off to Thailand February 16 – 19 for the Honda LPGA Thailand 2012 Tournament and Singapore for the HSBC Women’s Championship at the end of the month. In mid-March the Tour continues in North America with the Founders Cup in Phoenix, Arizona, the Kia Classic in Carlsbad, CA and stays on the west coast for the Kraft Nabisco Cahmpionship in late March.

Over the following ten months the LPGA Tour criss-crosses the globe, taking in tours from Canada to Brazil to the United Kingdom. It’s a daunting schedule, but with the purse reaching close to $47 million, a lot of the players will be eager to travel the globe.

And good news for all LPGA Tour Fans living in North America: All weekend telecasts of the tour’s North American events will be broadcast LIVE!!! on the Golf Channel. Check your local listings for details.

At Women’s Golf Center we have long been concerned about the LPGA’s ability to attract tournament sponsors and hold the attention of the entertainment media. I think it is wonderful that these super stars have a worldwide presence but I would like to see their schedule start earlier with some events in the U.S. It is very difficult to hold on to the viewing public’s attention when there are so many options out there.
I also would like to see all of the LPGA’s Tour events thoroughly covered regardless in what venue they are being held.

I was looking forward to the promised Australian Open coverage on Golfchannel today… but Pebble Beach and the Pro-Am took precedance. Must check the TV schedule more closely for tomorrow’s final day.
