Golf Game: What Do You Do After You Lose?

When it comes to your golf game: what do you do after you lose?

Watching the demise of the USA Team in this year’s Solheim battle for the cup, I could not help but be down hearted. They tried so hard and with such enthusiasm. Even at the end when  it would take a real miracle to pull out a win, the women did not give up. They played their hearts out. And they played well. Everyone of them should be proud.

It was just those #$%!@ putts. One after the other looked to be going in and then “slip!” would lip out and circle the cup, or miss the edge by just the slightest degree. But it was a miss, and that’s golf.

Meantime, the Europeans hit and drove just as well, but each putt seemed to have been “magically magnetized” and went straight into the cup. They were sinking putts from 30 feet, 50 feet, even 60 feet away. And they did it with style and authority.

So, it’s the day after, and the cup has been retained by the Europeans. Good for them. Hurrah 3x Hurrah.

Now comes the depression. Sigh. What happens now? What’s the next move?

When you lose a golf game, how do you react? What’s the sporting thing to do? They say 90% of the game happens between your ears. It’s a mental game more than a physical one. So how do you manage the thought process after you lose a golf game? How do you scrape yourself up off the green and move on? I really want to know.

Just the thought of losing in the game makes me want to leave and be alone. It may sound exaggerated but I hate losing. Well, I have overcome the feeling. Everyone fails so it wouldn’t make you least of a person if you accept it. What I do is eat as much as I can, shop until I drop, and I practice a lot.

Shopping seems to be one of those activities that brings “relief” when you lose, but practice might have a better result on your game, and less on your credit card. But we all handle loss differently. I say, do what makes you feel better!

You’re both correct. Shopping is sometimes a remedy for my lost. But isn’t it awful that it can still make you a loser. Pat is right. We will just end up with an empty pocket if we always do it that way. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. But I doubt it if I can fight the urge of shopping after losing a game.

Loosing a game is disheartening…but we must accept the fact that we have hit a few poor shots and get on with it.We must try to correct the mistakes which we made, focus on those mistakes and practice more to improve our game.

Good question, Pat! I know it’s very disappointing but losing in the game makes me feel braver. With your question, what do I do after I lose in the game? For the sake of golf etiquette, I’d congratulate my opponent, leave with smile plastered on my face then head to the nearest shop and go shopping. Yes, it may sound funny but shopping can make me feel better. Who wouldn’t be when all I can think of is getting back in the golf course, wearing a sexy yet comfy golf dress telling them that I’ll never be a loser again.
