Golf Travel: Playing at Amelia Island Plantation

The Tee Club “Get Away Gurls” Golf Travel Adventure – Day 1

golf-flEach year the “Get Away Gurls” from my Tee Club organize a golf vacation trip to someplace in the warm south. Sixteen women of varying degrees of golfing ability join together for a five day adventure. Over the last nine years we have stayed at some great resorts, among them Pinehurst, Orlando and this year, Amelia Island Plantation, just outside of Jacksonville, Florida.

Without husbands, children or jobs to tie us down, we spend most of each day at a spectacular golf course, or soaking up the early fall sun on the beach or at the pool.

For the next three days, this blog will chronicle our game!

Early Thursday, JetBlue flew our crowd on a direct flight from Boston to Jacksonville, Florida. After juggling luggage and picking up rental cars, we headed to the Plantation, a large complex of townhouses, condos, villas and, of course, golf courses.

Our first full day on the Island Plantation was spent in playing golf at the Amelia River Golf Course. We split into four teams, A, B, C, and D players, with a Best Ball Net Score and a putting contest as our goal.

The course played fairly easily. The Tee Club plays each week on a course that is rated as more difficult, so The River was not too intimidating. However, there are a couple of water holes with a surprise lateral water hazard just before the greens, and an island green on the 17th hole. With the humidity high and the sun blazing hot, we were all happy to be using golf carts to get around the course (5,417 yards using the red tees).

The staff were helpful, the course, in great condition, and the pace easy enough with little pressure. If there was any drawback it would be in the club house amenities. The pro shop was not fully stocked, with no items on sale which you might expect on “off season,” and the Grill offered only cold sandwiches or hot dogs. There was plenty of beer however, which we eagerly enjoyed after our round of 18.

Tomorrow we head out to our second Amelia Island Platation Golf Course: Long Point.
